Davidson’s Camp Ground

Davidson’s Camp Ground is situated about fifteen miles west of Arkadelphia, and three miles beyond Hollywood. Mr. J. J. Davidson, donated five acres of land to be used exclusively for a Methodist camp ground, and anyone has a privilege of building a tent on the ground, and it was named Davidson’s Camp Ground, as a compliment to the generous donor, Uncle Jerry Davidson.

It is a beautiful place for a campground, situated in a lovely grove of trees and surrounded by fifteen or twenty mineral springs, consisting of sulfur, iron and calybeate, which affords an ample supply of pure water. There were quite a number of tenters this year, among them were: Alfred Wright, D. Spence, Mr. McNutt, S.G. Conway, Jas. Clingan and Charles Lee Warren Denson & John Beadle, Rev. Joe Baker, (parsonage) Wm. Greer, J.J. Davidson, Sanford Pennington, A.D. Burton, Box. Harvell, Capt. Tm. East, J. M. May, J. B. Atkins, S. May & Jeff Moore, Bub Orsborn & Turner Weir, P. T. Davidson, W. B. Pullam, Jessie Pullam, N. S. Balch, E. D. Lowther, W. G. Hart, W. G. Skinnner, J. J. Menifee, W. W. May, W. A. Meazles, Geo. Gill, W. N. May, John Bolt, I. H. Powell, T. J. & Chas. Clark, G. W. Murry, Tom Holder, Besides these, there were a large number of cloth tents scattered in the woods for some distance around. The accommodations were ample for all. There was a good attendance of preachers on hand and preached very able and effective sermons. The following were the ministers:

Rev.C.C Godden, Joe Baker, A. B. Winfield, W.R. Harrison, Frank Moore, A. M. Robertson, R. M. Traylor, J. M. Cline, T. A. Hearn, C. A. Bayless, W. J. Davis. Besides the above, there were several local preachers present.

The meeting commenced last week, and it was expected to continue until next week, but on account of the heavy rains that had fallen, it broke up Thursday morning. On Sunday, there was a large crowd in attendance, suppose to be two thousand people. We never found a more hospitable and clever set of people than the tenters, and we are especially indebted to them for kindness shown us.
